Good News Widgets for iPhone: Home and Lock Screen
You can put a good news widget on your iPhone Home Screen or Lock Screen with the Uplifting News app, which includes two widgets: Top Story, showing the latest good news headline, and Daily Sunshine, showing a new positive thought each day. After installing the app, long press your Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap the widgets option, and search for Uplifting News. Both widgets work on the app's free tier.
People who search for this usually do not want another feed to check. They want good news to show up on its own, on the screens they already look at dozens of times a day. That is exactly what widgets are for. Here is how to set one up, what each widget shows, and when a plain affirmation app is honestly the better choice.
Transparency note: we make Uplifting News, the app these widgets belong to. We have tried to describe the alternatives fairly, including when one of them is the better fit.
Why a widget instead of another feed
A widget is a small panel that lives on your Home Screen or Lock Screen and updates itself. You never open it, it has no scroll, and it cannot pull you into twenty more stories. It just sits next to your clock and your calendar showing one thing.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. Every news app, ours included, requires a decision to open it, and opening any app invites lingering. A widget works in the opposite direction: the good news comes to you, in a glance, on a surface you were already looking at to check the time.
There is real demand for this framing. The Reuters Institute's Digital News Report found in 2026 that 42% of people worldwide avoid the news sometimes or often, and in its 2023 survey of 22,467 people, 55% of news avoiders said they were interested in positive news, against 35% who wanted the big stories of the day. Many people do not want more news on their phone. They want a different default: one good thing, visible without effort.
A feed asks you to come to it. A widget brings one good headline to a screen you already look at. For anyone trying to read less news, not more, that direction of travel is the whole point.
The two widget types: a headline and a daily thought
Uplifting News ships two widgets, and they do different jobs.
Top Story: the latest good news headline
Top Story shows the most recent headline from the app's feed of positive news publishers, and it updates on its own through the day. It works on both the Home Screen and the Lock Screen. Tapping it opens the story in the app. If you want proof, delivered passively, that good things keep happening, this is the widget to add. You can see the kind of stories it draws from on our good news today page, which shows the same live feed.
Daily Sunshine: one positive thought a day
Daily Sunshine shows a single positive thought that changes once a day. It is deliberately quiet: no headline, no link to chase, just a line of encouragement that is the same in the widget and in the app. It suits people who want a gentle first glance in the morning rather than any news at all, even good news.
Both widgets work on the free tier and neither shows ads, because the app has none anywhere.
How to add a good news widget to your Home Screen
- Install Uplifting News from the App Store. The free tier is enough; the widgets do not require a subscription.
- Open the app once so it can load the current stories.
- Long press an empty area of your Home Screen until the apps begin to jiggle.
- Tap the add or edit button in the top corner, then choose the option to add a widget. The wording varies slightly between iOS versions, but it is always the button in the top corner of the jiggling Home Screen.
- Search for Uplifting News in the widget gallery.
- Swipe to pick Top Story or Daily Sunshine and the size you want, then tap Add Widget.
- Drag it into place and tap Done. The widget updates itself from then on.
How to add a good news widget to your Lock Screen
- Install the app first if you have not already, from the App Store.
- Unlock your iPhone, then long press the Lock Screen until the customization view appears.
- Tap Customize, then select the Lock Screen.
- Tap the widget area below the clock.
- Search for Uplifting News, then tap Top Story or Daily Sunshine to place it.
- Tap Done in the top corner, then tap the wallpaper to set it.
Lock Screen widgets are compact by design, so Top Story shows a short version of the headline there. It still updates through the day, and tapping it takes you straight into the story.
What they look like
Top Story is a simple card showing the current headline in large type. Daily Sunshine is a single short line of text. Neither carries a logo splash, a badge count, or anything designed to pull your eyes. The App Store listing carries the current screenshots, so look there to see exactly how everything renders before installing anything.
Daily Sunshine vs affirmation apps
If what you actually want is a daily phrase of encouragement, there is a whole category built for that. Popular affirmation apps such as Motivation and I am put written affirmations in widgets and notifications, with far deeper customization of themes and categories than Daily Sunshine offers. If quotes alone are what you are after, one of those is the honest recommendation, and you do not need a news app at all.
The difference is what sits behind the widget. An affirmation is a phrase someone wrote to encourage you. A good news headline is a report of something good that actually happened. Daily Sunshine lands in between: one positive thought a day, attached to an app full of real reporting one tap away. For some people a quote alone feels hollow, and evidence that things go right lands deeper. If that is you, the Top Story widget, or the wider question of an app that only shows good news, is the better path. Our comparison of the best good news apps covers the full field.
Building a calmer first glance
A good news widget helps most when it is not competing with alarming banners above it. Two changes pair well with it.
- Prune breaking news alerts. Go to Settings, then Notifications, and turn off alerts from any news app you do not need in real time. The widget then becomes the news surface you see first, instead of whatever pushed hardest.
- Do not expect Apple News to do this job. The Apple News widget surfaces general headlines, and Apple News has no keyword blocklist, so you cannot filter topics out or make its widget positive-only. If the first glance must be good news, the filtering has to happen at the source, in an app built around positive coverage.
If the deeper problem is the pull of the scroll itself, the widget is one piece of a larger fix. We wrote a fuller guide on how to stop doomscrolling that covers the rest.
What the widget costs
Nothing, in practice. Both widgets work on the free tier, which gives you 10 stories a day and 10 saved favorites, with no ads, no tracking, and no account to create. The app's App Privacy label on the App Store is "Data Not Collected." The optional Unlimited subscription is $4.99 a month or $47.99 a year with a 1 week free trial, and it removes the daily story limit, but you can run both widgets forever without it.
Put one good headline on your Home Screen
Uplifting News is a clean, ad-free feed of genuinely good news for iPhone, with Top Story and Daily Sunshine widgets included on the free tier.
Download on the App StoreFrequently asked questions
Is there a widget that shows good news on iPhone?
Yes. The Uplifting News app for iPhone includes a Top Story widget that shows the latest good news headline on your Home Screen or Lock Screen, plus a Daily Sunshine widget with a new positive thought each day. Install the app, long press your Home Screen or Lock Screen, choose the widgets option, and search for Uplifting News. We make the app, so check the screenshots on its App Store listing first.
How do I add a good news widget to my iPhone Lock Screen?
Install a good news app that supports Lock Screen widgets, then long press your Lock Screen, tap Customize, select the Lock Screen, and tap the widget area below the clock. Search for the app, in our case Uplifting News, and choose the Top Story or Daily Sunshine widget. Tap Done and the widget updates on its own throughout the day.
Is a good news widget different from an affirmation widget?
Yes. Affirmation widgets like Motivation or I am show a written phrase of encouragement, while a good news widget shows a real, verified headline about something good that actually happened. Daily Sunshine sits in between: one positive thought a day, backed by an app full of real reporting. If a quote alone feels hollow, evidence that things go right can land deeper.
Do I have to pay to use the Uplifting News widgets?
No. The widgets work on the free tier, which includes 10 stories a day at no cost, with no ads, no tracking, and no account required. The optional Unlimited subscription is $4.99 a month or $47.99 a year with a 1 week free trial, and it removes the daily story limit, but the Top Story and Daily Sunshine widgets do not require it.
Can Apple News show only good news in a widget?
No. Apple News widgets surface general headlines and there is no keyword blocklist, so you cannot filter topics out or limit the widget to positive stories. If you want a Home Screen or Lock Screen surface that only ever shows good news, you need an app built around positive coverage, since the filtering happens at the source, not on your phone.
